The Federico Alvarez-directed film debuts atop the box office, forcing the last week's conqueror 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' to share the second place with 'The Croods'.

"Evil Dead" tops the North American box office in its opening week with $25.8 million. The remake of director Sam Raimi's demonic possession tale beats the previous champ "G.I. Joe: Retaliation", which won the top spot with $40.5 million last week.
Among horror remakes, the Jane Levy-starring thriller bags more on the opening weekend than "Texas Chainsaw 3D", which opened to $21.7 million in January, but less than "Mama", which earned $28.4 million in February. Receiving a "C+" from CinemaScore, it is predicted to wind up with around $50 million.
"Jurassic Park", the 3D re-release of Steven Spielberg's 1993 film, ranks at No. 4 on its debut weekend. The dino-themed film, which takes in $18.6 million, has a better start than "Titanic", which debuted to $17.3 million last April. However, the Spielberg classic loses to "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace", which opened with $22.4 million in February 2012.
"The Croods" about pre-historic family *is tied with the "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" sequel for the second place. The action sequel was off 48 percent from opening weekend, yet has earned $86.4 million through 11 days. Meanwhile, the prehistoric comedy has bagged $125.3 million since its debut on April 4 and has a chance at closing with over $200 million.
"Olympus Has Fallen" about the White House takeover by terrorists rounds up the top 5 with $10.2 million and has grossed $71.2 million.
