The man, who broke into LL Cool J's home in Sherman Oaks, California, claimed innocent. Jonathan A. Kirby was slapped with first-degree burglary with a person present. If convicted, he could face up to 38 years to life in prison due to his lengthy criminal record.

Kirby previously had at least two convictions in California. In 1988, he was also found guilty of manslaughter in Dallas and sentenced to six years in jail before being released on parole the next year. If he was convicted in this new case, it would be a "third strike" under California law.

Kirby showed up during a hearing on Tuesday, August 28 in a Van Nuys, California courtroom with a bruised face. The 56-year-old homeless man reportedly nursed a broken nose, jaw and ribs after taken down by Cool J during the trespassing and held until the LAPD arrested him.

Kirby sneaked into Cool J's house at 2 in the morning when the family was sleeping. The rapper sprang into action when his home security alarm went off and "physically detained" the intruder. He was not injured, and nothing was stolen from the house.

After briefly staying in hospital to treat his injuries, Kirby is currently being held in prison with bail set at $1.1 million. A next hearing to determine if there's enough evidence for him to stand trial is scheduled for September 10 in Los Angeles.
