CBS is close to secure David Letterman as "Late Show" host through 2014. Words are, the network has authorized the 64-year-old comedian's production company, Worldwide Pants, to make new agreements with the key members of "Late Show with David Letterman" staff, producers and writers.

"That means a final deal with Dave is very close," one of the executives involved in the negotiations told The New York Times. Should he seal the new two-year deal, Letterman will surpass Johnny Carson's 30-year run as the longest host in late-night TV history.

By 2014, Letterman will have been on the air for 32 years in late night. He previously hosted NBC's "Late Night" show for 11 years, before moving to CBS in 1993.

Confirming there have been talks about extending Letterman's contract which will end this August, CBS stated that it is currently also negotiation new deal with Craig Ferguson. "As would be expected at this time, we're having conversations with both Dave and Craig about future years," the Eye said in a statement. "There are no further details to announce at this time."

"The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" is also produced by Letterman's Worldwide Pants.
