Having been talk of the town in its first season, "The Walking Dead" returns with more eager fans in its sophomore year. The zombie-themed series' second season debuted to 7.3 million viewers on Sunday, October 16, or up 38|percent| from last season's premiere.
More fascinating, the new season's opener nabbed 4.8 million viewers among adults 18-49 and 4.2 million audience aged 25-54. According to AMC, this numbers represent a new record for a single drama telecast in basic cable history.
" 'The Walking Dead' is one of those rare television programs that reaches both a core genre fan as well as broad audiences simply looking for a great, character-based story," says AMC president Charlie Collier. "That 'The Walking Dead' is now the most watched drama in the history of basic cable is staggering, just like our zombies."
With the 10:30 P.M. and 12:30 A.M. encores being counted, the second season premiere of the Andrew Lincoln-starring series earned 11 million total viewers.
