"Space Invaders", arcade game from Taito and Midway that was popular in 1980s, is going big screen. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment's Gigi Pritzker are teaming up to develop the project and have optioned the rights to the name.

There was once a report that Warner Bros. was eying this classic game for a feature-length movie but the whispers faded out. Taking over, di Bonaventura and Pritzker are looking for a screenwriter that would come up with a story.

Guinness World Records ranked "Space Invaders" as the top arcade game of all time. The game has rows and rows of alien ships firing lasers into a single player who takes cover behind slowly disintegrating blocks.

Although credited for pop culture by the turn of the decade, the game which was developed in 1978 doesn't have a built-in mythology. Therefore, chances are good that this movie will use its inspirations as the selling point.

di Bonaventura has been developing projects based on 80s histeria. Two of them are "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe". He's also lining up a movie based on arcade game "Asteroids" and a remake of "Pet Sematary".
