From "Sex and the City", Cynthia Nixon jumps to "The Big C". The actress who plays Miranda in the successful series is taking a new role in another HBO series, playing a friend of the main character, Laura Linney's Cathy.

A long lost and flaky college roommate of Cathy, Nixon's Rebeca will re-enter Cathy's life and "shakes things up in a wild way", the press release says. Meanwhile, Cathy is a reserved suburban wife and mother whose recent cancer diagnosis forces her to shake up her life and find hope, humor and the light side of a dark situation, while managing her immature but well-meaning husband, played by Oliver Platt.

The 13-episode series is shooting in Stamford, Connecticut for an August 16 premiere. Nixon's role is currently set as "recurring", just like Gabourey Sidibe's and Idris Elba's.
