Shonda Rhimes Defends 'Grey's Anatomy' Finale
TV

The creator of the drama series says there's a good reason to every pain and loss that the characters went through in the May 20 episode.

AceShowbiz - "Grey's Anatomy" delivered a heart-wrenching story in the sixth season finale on Thursday, May 20 night that there are more questions coming out rather than satisfying answers. The creator Shonda Rhimes took responsibility of taking the show into that direction by providing reasons why [Spoiler Alert] some doctors have to be shot and Meredith has to suffer miscarriage.

In her blog, Shonda admitted that she felt uneasy when writing the two-hour episode. "On an almost daily basis, I would come into work and throw myself down on the sofa in the middle of the office and burst into tears like a...well, like a b*tch baby," she recalled. "And I would tell the other Grey's writers, 'I don't think I can do this. It's too horrible. People are getting hurt. That man is shooting them."

Even worse, she planned a major character's death but decided to scrap off the plan because it was too painful. "In my first draft of Part 1, Gary Clark shot Bailey. Bailey. He shot her. And I wrote it and then I couldn't sleep, for days and days, I could not sleep and I had to remove it from the script. Bailey getting shot was just too much for me. She's our anchor. She's the soul. ...Derek was devastating enough but both Derek and Bailey...it meant I couldn't go on."

Shonda also has a good reason why she threw away the chance of Meredith and Derek having a baby soon. She explained, "Meredith is whole and healed. I love the scene where she tells April that it took her forever to find Derek and then it took her forever to realize she wanted to be his wife, have his kids. That's a changed woman. The very fact that being pregnant makes her happy makes her a changed woman. And then she lost the baby. ...But you don't know how much you wanted something until you have lost it. ...I wanted her to realize just HOW BADLY she wanted a baby."

In an interview with EW, Shonda said she had scrapped the initial thought that MerDer will never have children. Asked whether there would be a baby in the future, Shonda said, "Definitely. For me, this is the beginning of the baby story."

Regarding how the seventh season will take from here, Shonda refused to give any details particularly because she has not given it any thought. "We've talked about it. We've talked about it endlessly. We've come up with 40 thousand different scenarios. The truth is, I'm exhausted. We just finished season 6. I don't even want to think about season 7," she said in the lengthy interview.
