Recognized to be the most original and imaginative debut feature screened at this year's Times BFI London Film Festival, animated flick "Persepolis" was granted the BFI Sutherland Trophy on Thursday, November 1, 2007.

Announcement was made during the closing-night gala of the 51st edition of the festival held at London's Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square. The honor then got presented by member of the jury Natalie Press to Candy Vincent-Smith from Optimum Releasing on behalf of directors Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi who both were unable to attend the presentation.

"An astonishing and courageous film which captures a universal story with real style. Irreverent, fresh, witty and also heartbreaking, Persepolis is certainly a deserving winner of this year's award," the Sutherland Jury said in a statement.

Other titles honored during the ceremony included Cristian Nemescu's "California Dreaming (Endless)" and Tom Tagholm's "A Bout de Truffe." The former took the 12th annual Satyajit Ray Award while the latter winning the TCM Short Film Award. Directing names also nabbed kudos as well with Joanna Hogg being handed the 10th FIPRESCI International Critics Award for "Unrelated" and Sarah Gavron the Alfred Dunhill Award for "Brick Lane."
