As the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain blurs the line between the living and the dead, a small, isolated town prepares for its annual ritual with a mixture of reverence and dread. This year, however, the old traditions awaken something far more sinister than folkloric memory. A young historian, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, returns to her ancestral home to document the customs, only to discover that her own family is entwined with the town’s darkest secret. Her skepticism is challenged by a reclusive local believer, played by Ethan Hawke, who insists the legends are warnings of a very real and gathering evil. The film masterfully builds an atmosphere of creeping folk horror, where every rustle in the autumn leaves and every flickering jack-o’-lantern feels charged with malice. As the night deepens, the community must confront the terrifying truth behind their ceremonies, forcing them to choose between preserving their history or surviving the malevolent force they have unwittingly invited.
