In the tranquil countryside of Quebec, a lifetime of repressed memories surfaces for Melanie Lansing Winters, played by Susan Sarandon. Her peaceful life with her devoted husband David, Christopher Plummer, is disrupted by the arrival of two haunting figures from her past: Jakob, Gabriel Byrne, a fellow survivor from her childhood in a WWII internment camp, and Christopher, Max von Sydow, the enigmatic man who protected them. This poignant drama, directed by Paolo Barzman, weaves together past and present as the trio is forced to confront the profound emotional debt and shared trauma that has silently shaped their lives for decades. As old wounds reopen and long-buried secrets gently unfurl, the film explores the complex arithmetic of guilt, gratitude, and love, questioning whether the scars of history can ever truly be reconciled with the demands of the present.
