Laura Mvula Biography

news-detailsLaura Mvula, born Laura Douglas on April 23, 1986, in Birmingham, England, is a British singer and songwriter whose classically trained voice and genre-defying sound have earned her critical acclaim and a distinctive place in contemporary British music. Before rising to prominence as a solo artist, she honed her craft as a member and leader of a cappella, jazz, neo-soul, and gospel groups and choirs, experiences that deeply informed the layered, choral textures that would come to define her recordings.

In 2012, Mvula signed with RCA Records and released her debut extended play, She, which drew widespread praise from critics. The following year, she released her debut studio album, Sing to the Moon, to favorable reviews. The record showcased her orchestral pop sensibilities and earned her two Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards as well as a Mercury Prize nomination, establishing her as one of the most compelling new voices in British music. In 2014, she released an orchestral re-recording of the album with the Metropole Orkest, further demonstrating her affinity for large-scale arrangements.

Her second album, The Dreaming Room, arrived in 2016 and was likewise received with critical acclaim. The record won her an Ivor Novello award and brought her a second Mercury Prize nomination, cementing her reputation as an artist of both commercial and artistic significance. That same year, she received an honorary doctorate of music from her alma mater, Birmingham City University, in recognition of her achievements.

Beyond her recording career, Mvula expanded into theatrical composition, writing the music for the 2017 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Antony & Cleopatra. While continuing work on her third album, she released the 1/f EP in February 2021, a project that marked a sonic shift toward more electronic and synth-driven textures. Her willingness to evolve artistically while retaining the emotional depth and vocal sophistication of her earlier work has kept her at the forefront of British soul and pop music.
