Kim Hyun-ah, known professionally as HyunA, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper, and model who has become one of the most recognizable and influential figures in the K-pop industry. Born on June 6, 1992, in Seoul, South Korea, she has built a career defined by her bold performance style, genre-blending music, and her reputation as a pioneering female solo artist in a field long dominated by idol groups.
HyunA first entered the entertainment spotlight in February 2007 as a member of the girl group Wonder Girls. However, she left the group shortly after its debut due to health concerns and subsequently departed JYP Entertainment. She soon joined Cube Entertainment and debuted in June 2009 as a member of the girl group 4Minute. The group achieved considerable success and helped establish her as a dynamic performer and rapper within the Korean music scene.
In 2010, HyunA launched her solo career with a style she described as "performance-oriented music." Her debut solo single "Change" charted at number two on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart, signaling her potential as a standalone artist. Wider public recognition followed in 2011 with the release of her first extended play, Bubble Pop!. The title track sold more than three million digital copies, and the accompanying music video made her the first female K-pop solo artist to surpass 100 million views on a single video on YouTube. That same year, she formed the duo Trouble Maker with former Beast member Hyunseung, and their hit single "Trouble Maker" became a commercial and critical success.
HyunA continued to build momentum in 2012 by appearing in a successful duet rendition of Psy's worldwide hit "Gangnam Style." She released her second extended play, Melting, which featured the number-one single "Ice Cream." Her subsequent extended plays, A Talk and A+, produced the successful singles "Red" and "Roll Deep," respectively, further cementing her chart presence and artistic identity.
Following 4Minute's disbandment in mid-2016, HyunA released her fifth extended play, A'wesome, supported by her first concert tour, The Queen's Back. In 2017, she formed the trio Triple H with Pentagon members Hui and E'Dawn, and also released her sixth extended play, Following. In 2018, she ended her contract with Cube Entertainment after several internal conflicts and signed with Psy's P Nation the following year. Her first digital single under the label, "Flower Shower," became her seventh top-ten entry on the US Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. In 2021, she released her seventh extended play, I'm Not Cool.
Beyond her music career, HyunA is also known as a model and has remained a prominent figure in fashion and pop culture. She is married to Yong Jun-hyung, a fellow entertainer. With a career spanning over a decade, HyunA continues to be celebrated as a trailblazer for female solo artists in K-pop and a lasting influence on the genre's global reach.
