Deftones is an influential American alternative metal band known for their unique blend of heavy rock, experimental soundscapes, and atmospheric melodies. Formed in 1988 in Sacramento, California, the band quickly gained notoriety in the 1990s with their debut album, "Adrenaline," released in 1995. This record helped establish them as a key player in the nu-metal scene, showcasing their ability to fuse aggressive guitar riffs with ethereal vocals.
The band's lineup initially consisted of frontman Chino Moreno, lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham. In 1990, bassist Chi Cheng joined the group, followed by keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado in 1999. After solidifying their lineup in 1993, Deftones signed with Maverick Records and began to make waves in the music industry. Their sophomore album, "Around the Fur," released in 1997, achieved platinum status in the United States, further solidifying their growing fan base.
Deftones reached new heights with their third album, "White Pony," in 2000, which marked a significant shift in their sound towards a more experimental approach. This album featured the Grammy Award-winning track "Elite," which showcased their ability to combine heavy metal with elements of shoegaze and dream pop. The self-titled fourth album, released in 2003, debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200, further demonstrating the band's commercial appeal.
In 2006, Deftones released "Saturday Night Wrist," an album that was shaped by internal creative tensions and personal struggles. The band faced a tragic setback in 2008 when bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a severe traffic accident that left him in a minimally conscious state until his passing in 2013 due to cardiac arrest. In the aftermath of Cheng's accident, Deftones paused production on a planned album titled "Eros" and brought in Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega to fill the void until his departure in early 2021.
The band made a triumphant comeback with "Diamond Eyes" in 2010, followed by a series of critically acclaimed albums: "Koi No Yokan" in 2012, "Gore" in 2016, and "Ohms" in 2020, each reinforcing Deftones' status as one of the leading acts in modern rock. In 2025, they released their tenth studio album, "Private Music," which became their most critically acclaimed work to date, charting in a career-high 26 countries. This album also marked the first appearance of bassist Fred Sablan, further diversifying the band’s sound and reinforcing their legacy in the rock genre.
Throughout their career, Deftones have been lauded for their innovative approach to music, earning numerous accolades and a dedicated global fan base. Their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots has cemented them as a vital part of the rock music landscape.
