Emerging from Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late 1980s, Ace of Base became one of the defining pop acts of the 1990s, achieving a level of global success that placed them among the most successful Swedish music exports in history. The group was originally formed in 1987 by siblings Jonas, Linn, and Jenny Berggren, who were later joined by Ulf Ekberg. Their breakthrough was nothing short of meteoric, propelled by a distinctive fusion of pop melodies, reggae-inflected rhythms, and early electronic production that captured the spirit of the decade.
The group's debut album, initially released in Scandinavia in 1992 as "Happy Nation," became a worldwide phenomenon when it was re-packaged and expanded as "The Sign" for the international market in 1993. This record catapulted them to superstardom, driven by an unprecedented string of chart-topping singles. "All That She Wants" became an inescapable global hit, followed by the iconic title track "The Sign" and "Don't Turn Around." Their debut was certified nine times platinum in the United States and remarkably became the best-selling album of 1994, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. It was the first debut to spawn three number-one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart.
Ace of Base solidified their status as hitmakers throughout the remainder of the 1990s with subsequent albums "The Bridge" (1995) and "Flowers" (1998), later re-titled "Cruel Summer" for North America. They delivered further international smashes including "Beautiful Life," "Lucky Love," a cover of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer," and "Life Is a Flower." Their catchy, optimistic pop anthems dominated airwaves and music television channels like MTV, contributing to total sales of over 30 million copies of their first four studio albums. This commercial achievement cemented them as the third most successful Swedish group ever, behind only the legendary ABBA and Roxette.
The group's activity gradually slowed following the 2002 album "Da Capo" and subsequent lineup changes, with Linn Berggren departing from the public eye. While largely inactive as a recording unit since around 2012, Ace of Base has never officially announced a disbandment. In recent years, they have engaged with fans by releasing previously unheard demo tracks, first through social media and later on the 2015 compilation "Hidden Gems." A second volume was included in the 2020 career-spanning box set "All That She Wants: The Classic Collection." Jenny Berggren maintains the group's musical legacy, regularly performing their classic hits in solo concerts around the world, ensuring the enduring appeal of Ace of Base's signature sound.
