Shameless is an American comedy-drama television series that premiered on Showtime on January 9, 2011. The series is based on the British series of the same name created by Paul Abbott. The American adaptation was developed by John Wells and stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Justin Chatwin, Shanola Hampton, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, and Noel Fisher. The series follows the Gallagher family, a working-class family living in the South Side of Chicago. The family is headed by Frank Gallagher (Macy), an alcoholic and drug-addicted patriarch who is often absent from the home. The family is also composed of Fiona (Rossum), the eldest daughter who is the de facto matriarch; Lip (Chatwin), the intelligent and ambitious son; Ian (Monaghan), the gay son who suffers from bipolar disorder; and Debbie (Hampton), the rebellious daughter. The series has been praised for its realistic portrayal of working-class life and its exploration of complex social issues.
