Frontier Synopsis

news-details

'Frontier' follows the chaotic and violent struggle to control wealth and power in the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. Told from multiple perspectives, the series takes place in a world where business negotiations might be resolved with close-quarter hatchet fights, and where delicate relations between native tribes and Europeans can spark bloody conflicts.

Set against the stunning, raw backdrop of 1700s Canada, FRONTIER is a thrilling action-adventure series revolving around warring factions vying for control of the fur trade in a ruthless, brutal game of wealth and power. Irish stowaway Michael Smyth (Landon Liboiron) has barely stepped foot in the New World when he becomes embroiled in a dangerous battle between the fearless and violent Declan Harp (Jason Momoa) and the formidable Lord Benton (Alun Armstrong) of the Hudson's Bay Company.

The century-long monopoly of the mighty HBC is beginning to crumble, with competing companies operating in the vast wilderness of "The Disputed Territory" and cutting deep into HBC profits. Merciless HBC officer Lord Benton, along with right-hand man Captain Jonathan Chesterfield (Evan Jonigkeit), returns to the New World to strengthen the Company's stranglehold on the trade, and sets out to dismantle the growing competition - and most importantly, to personally take down Declan Harp.

For Harp, the feeling is more than mutual. Harp recruits young Michael Smyth into his Black Wolf Company, and along with Sokanon (Jessica Matten), Dimanche (William Belleau) and Samoset (Zahn McClarnon), Harp sets out to right the wrongs of the past. But other ruthless players in the Bay complicate plans for both Harp and Lord Benton, and rising tension between these players is only moments away from exploding into bloody violence: the combustible Scottish Brown Brothers, Douglas (Allan Hawco) and Malcolm (Michael Patric), who will do anything to keep the family business afloat; crafty ale house owner and information broker Grace Emberly (Zoe Boyle), a threat hiding in plain sight; rich American entrepreneur Samuel Grant (Shawn Doyle) and his shadow Cobbs Pond (Greg Bryk) pulling strings in the Frontier from the safety of Montreal; meddling, drunken English Jesuit Father James Coffin (Christian McKay), whose loyalty is to the ale first and God second; and critical Cree trade partners the Lake Walkers, led by tempered Kamenna (Tantoo Cardinal) and passionate Machk (Raoul Trujillo), who control the vast, unyielding territory which all the trade companies are seeking to exploit.

A dramatic story of revenge and riches, betrayal and brutality, and survival of the fittest in the James Bay fur trade, where everyone is gunning to be the last man standing -- and willing to do whatever it takes to hold the ultimate keys to the kingdom.
