A $50 million insurance settlement brings Sara back to enlist Neal and Peter's aid in investigating Sophie Covington, a wealthy young widow whose hedge funder husband, Grant, died in what appeared to be an accident. Sara wants to make sure that Sophie isn't getting away with murder, but when Neal intervenes to save her from a kidnapping attempt, they realize that Sophie is more prey than predator.
Sophie is reluctant to talk to the FBI after the kidnapping attempt, but she will talk to her knight in shining armor. Soon, the team has zeroed in on Will Mailer, a business partner of Grant's who may have blood on his hands and designs on Sophie's insurance settlement. If Will thought someone else was going after the money, perhaps they could bait a trap for him? With Neal already undercover, it wouldn't be a stretch to convince Will that the con man has Sophie in his cross hairs. But when Sophie develops feelings for Neal, the case becomes more complicated.
Meanwhile, as Ellen's days in the city wind down, she prepares to make good on her promise to Neal by introducing him to a man with ties to his father. Little do they realize that digging into the past will bring it right to their doorstep.
