When Bruce trips over a pair of skis in the apartment, he assumes they're Gustaf's. In actuality, they're Emma's and she's got a surprise for him: they're going on a ski trip. Having played baseball and basketball in college, Bruce is pretty confident about his athleticism - he even has the scrapbook to prove it - so he doesn't take Emma seriously when she says she was an accomplished competitive skier when she was younger. To Bruce, how hard could skiing be?

At breakfast, Emma encourages Gustaf to move out and get his life together. She wants him to find an apartment, a job, a girlfriend and a dog, in that order. Determined to prove he can do it without her help, Gustaf heads out. When he returns, he has a dog. Emma says he started at the wrong end of the list, but Gustaf adds that he's seeing an apartment later that day.

When Birger and Viveka pick up Bruce and Emma, it's clear Birger is looking forward to the trip and Viveka isn't. Birger even asks why Emma would bring Bruce along when he's not part of the tradition. Gustaf, meanwhile, tours a prospective apartment and immediately tells the realtor he'll take it. When she informs him the rent is 50,000 crowns a month, however, Gustaf calls the bank to check his finances. He learns that he has less than 4,000 crowns to his name and that he won't be offered a loan without a job. More embarrassingly, when we see who Gustaf is speaking to, we learn it's Viveka.

At the ski resort, Bruce is forced to admit he's never skied before when goes to rent a pair of skis. The man at the rental desk recommends that Bruce enroll in the school for beginners. Offended, Bruce again brings up his college athleticism, but Emma says it's a good idea. When Bruce asks if she'll be joining him, she reminds him of how she once beat Olympic athlete Anja Parsons as proof of how capable she is. Hearing Anja's name, the man at the rental desk informs Emma that she's here today, too.

The instructor for the skiing school turns out be a young girl, as are most of Bruce's fellow students. Eager to get the training over with, he tries to plow ahead but soon learns he can barely stay upright. Frustrated, Bruce tries to ski away when the instructor's back is turned, but he moves so slowly, she easily catches him and brings him back to the group.

Gustaf attempts to get around his lack of funds by propositioning the realtor, whom he learns has a job but no husband or dog. He tells her they should move in together. She rejects this idea but offers to take Gustaf out for a drink - and then some. Gustaf, not getting her meaning, assumes she just means dinner and dessert.

Viveka's patience with Birger is wearing thin as he continues to cling to the traditions of ski trips past. When he asks her if she'd like an egg sandwich, Viveka snaps and finally admits she doesn't even like egg sandwiches. Emma joins Bruce for lunch after spending her morning chasing Anja on the slopes. Bruce downplays his poor skiing skills by claiming skiing isn't even a real sport. When he gets a call from his mom, Bruce goes outside to take it, and Gustaf takes his seat. He laments how hard it is to find an apartment. Emma offers to put him in touch with a coworker looking to rent out his, but Gustaf's messing with her; he's already secured one.

Bruce's mom agrees that skiing isn't a real sport - it's just walking with long shoes on snow - but when Bruce mentions that Sweden is beautiful in the winter and that his parents should come visit, she drops the bombshell that they're arriving on Friday. They want to help plan the wedding. The news doesn't exactly excite Emma, nor does it sit well with her when Bruce mentions his mom also doesn't consider skiing a sport. She challenges Bruce to a race if he's so sure he's mastered it in one day. It hits Bruce that there's no way out of this.

Viveka catches up with Birger inside the lodge, where he admits that clinging to tradition helps him deal with the fact that it's been a long time since the kids were young and Viveka and Birger spent most of their time together. Viveka reminds him that 10 years from now, they'll look back on the present and feel that way too, so it's best to just enjoy the moment.

When Bruce and Emma reach the top of the slope, Bruce finally comes clean that he can't ski and that he's been exaggerating all along. Emma admits she knew that, and she's proud of him for even coming this far. She promises to help him down the slope, but then she spots Anja skiing past. Emma leaves Bruce behind and chases after Anja once more, leaving Bruce to slide down in a seated position.

Inside the lodge, Bruce continues to exclaim that skiing isn't a real sport, including to a woman seated next to him who turns out to be a professional skier. When Emma finds him, she has snot all over her face but dismisses Bruce's attempts to warn her when she realizes he's seated next to Anja. Emma asks Anja if she remembers their race, but Anja says it was a long time ago. She eventually leaves after Emma continues to pester her. After she does, Emma finally listens to Bruce and realizes he wasn't lying about the snot. Embarrassment struck them both that day.
