After the fight with the Abbots, Sunny lies lifeless on the ground of the ski lodge, with his eyes open and his hand over his chest.

In a dream, Sunny - with no kill tats on his back - lies in bed at a farmhouse. Veil enters and kisses him. She's pleased he's awakened from a fever he's been suffering from the past few days. A 10-year-old Henry enters, as Sunny bewilderedly stares at his family. Veil suggests Sunny's still delirious and asks if she can get him anything, but he replies that he has "everything I ever wanted right here." Sunny hears someone whisper his name. When he looks out the window, he sees the ghostly figure of a girl.

In the present, M.K. spots markings forming on Sunny's chest and Bajie realizes that Cyan attacked Sunny with the Hand of Five Poisons, a deadly technique. Bajie points out the bruises are affecting Sunny's organs and doubts he can be saved. M.K. refuses to let him die after just losing Ava.

In Sunny's dream, Henry says he wants to be a fighter when he grows up. They play together near the barn, but Henry recoils when he sees their pigs have been slaughtered and arranged in a row with the sign of crosses in their backs. Sunny lies and tells Henry a wolf did it. A drop of blood trickles from above onto Sunny's forehead.

In the present, M.K. drips water onto Sunny's face and notices his bruises worsening. Bajie tells M.K. it's a "lousy way to go." M.K. is taken aback by Bajie's nonchalance and suggests stealing the Master's old scrolls, which could hold a cure. Bajie reminds him that neither of them have their gift anymore and the mission will be risky, but M.K. convinces him it's the right thing to do.

In his dream, Sunny notices the ghostly girl staring at him from the woods, but she disappears. Veil comes out of the farmhouse and voices concern about what happened with the pigs. Sunny promises to protect her.

Sunny enters Henry's room and notices a gash on Henry's hand. Henry admits he accidentally cut himself with a sword he got from Artemis, a girl he met in the woods. When Henry pulls the sword from under his bed, it's Nathaniel Moon's ringed sword. Sunny warns Henry to stay away from Artemis.

In the present, M.K. and Bajie drive Nos's car with Sunny in the back. Bajie admits he left the Monastery because of a girl named Flea, his Novice at the time, who was cleansed after her violent chi-enhanced attack while trying to save a dark one from slavers. "No one survived. Not even the people she was trying to help," Bajie recounts.

At her mansion, Jade catches a group of house Cogs stealing from her. When she confronts them, one of the Cogs slaps her and says she's done taking orders from her. Marcel, Jade's Regent, enters and informs her that the Widow's forces have breached their gates. The Cogs are deserting and the armadillo Clippers are pledging their loyalty to the Widow.

In his dream, Sunny finds ghastly cuts on Henry's back in the shape of kill tats. Henry says Artemis did it to him because she was angry over Sunny taking the sword. Veil rushes in and tends to Henry.

In the kitchen, the ghostly figure that Sunny had been seeing appears and grabs him by the neck. She asks if he remembers her, and Sunny asks if she's Artemis.

In the present, Sunny chokes in the back of Nos's car. M.K. puts a gas mask over Sunny's face.

Jade and a few remaining armadillo Clippers try to escape, but the Widow's guards surround the mansion outside. A butterfly star is thrown into the back of Marcel's head. The Widow and Tilda corner Jade, who tries to attack them but is quickly disarmed. The Widow notes how Jade learned "the game" quickly to procure her Baron position. Jade reminds the Widow she doesn't kill women, but Quinn enters and the Widow offers that "he might."

Bajie and M.K. park near the Monastery and leave Sunny in the car. Bajie tells M.K. how to sneak in, but refuses to go in himself. M.K. opens up to Bajie about killing his mother and compares himself to Flea. He shares his plan to find Azra by using Sunny's compass. Bajie's interest is piqued and they head off together, with Moon's sword.

Quinn speaks privately to Jade and notes how she rose to power after being a Cog, just like him. Jade declares her true love for Ryder and says he "wasn't a stone-hearted machine like you." Quinn, affected, walks away. The Widow waits to see Jade's fate, but Quinn only plans for an escort to take Jade to the border to be left on her own.

At the Monastery, Bajie tells M.K. to look for a leather satchel while he rummages through the Master's scrolls. M.K. finds the satchel with cleansing needles inside, then searches for Sunny's compass. Bajie secretly pockets it and tells M.K. to forget it - the compass is long gone.

The Master appears and launches Bajie and M.K. into the mess hall, where a group of Novices and Abbots are eating. She welcomes Bajie "home" and declares him a disappointment. M.K. tells the Master about Ava's death. The Master blames Bajie, warning that he only cares about himself, and orders the Novices and Abbots to attack. Bajie instructs M.K. to cut the Novices, which makes them turn on the Abbots with their chi power. While the huge brawl unfolds, M.K. and Bajie escape.

In Sunny's dream, Veil plans to leave and take Henry away from Sunny. Sunny hears Artemis laugh and runs out of the farmhouse, only to find she's not there. He hears Veil scream, returns to the farmhouse and finds Veil dead. He sobs as he holds her body, then notices bloody footsteps and follows them outside. Artemis points him in the direction of the pig pen, where Sunny finds Henry covered in blood. Henry admits he killed Veil because he didn't want to leave. "I'm going to be just like you," Henry says.

Sunny grabs a sword and runs to the woods to find Artemis. He whips out Moon's sword, but Artemis reminds Sunny that he has already killed her and her brother. "We're nothing but black lines on your back now," she taunts. Just then, ghostly figures of Sunny's past victims surround him with swords and slash lines on Sunny's back in the shape of his Clipper tattoos.

In the present, Sunny convulses. Bajie uses the scroll to determine where to place the needles into Sunny. After he embeds the last one, Sunny awakens.

The next morning, M.K. tells Sunny how Bajie saved his life, but Sunny doubts it was Bajie's plan. M.K. admits he couldn't lose Sunny and that Sunny is the closest thing he has to family.

M.K. finds Bajie near a stream and commends him for his help. Bajie says he was able to bring Flea back after she was cleansed by using his gift, which is why he doesn't have it anymore. Bajie says he plans to find Flea somewhere in the Badlands. As M.K. goes to tend to Sunny, Bajie stares at Sunny's compass.
