Melinda begins getting ominous messages from Carl the watcher ghost, and fears that his warnings are related to her unborn child. One particular comment that worries Melinda is "your future is in her hands," which leads her to believe that she will be having a baby girl. However, Melinda eventually learns that the reference was to Zoe, a friend of Eli's and fellow professor at Rockland U., whose area of expertise is supernatural myths and legends. Zoe had been researching a valuable and rare set of texts, but the books were slated to be sold off to help the University through tough economic times. Unbeknownst to her, Zoe had actually been the custodian of a very mystical book in the collection, which is stolen before the set can be sold. The thief tries to secretly return the book to Zoe, but while doing so he accidentally causes Zoe's death, after he startles her and she falls down her stairs. Now a ghost herself, she works with Eli and Carl, who had possessed the thief to steal the book, to keep the "book of changes" away from the dark forces trying to acquire it. Once they have the book in their possession, Carl tells Eli that he can't show the book to Melinda, but Eli can't keep something this big away from his friend, and they examine it together. Melinda then goes to Carl for answers about the book and how it pertains to the baby boy she now knows she is having, and Carl tells her to help prepare him for what's to come, and that "he'll be able to do all you can and more." Meanwhile, Melinda and Jim/Sam have been planning their wedding, and ultimately they elope with Delia and Eli as their witnesses.
