Kate is called in to mediate a dispute between Steve Jenks and the state of California. After spending 22 years in jail for a murder he didn't commit, Steve and his money-hungry lawyer are asking for $20 million in compensation. However, the state is only offering $2.4 million, and it's up to Kate to find common ground-and a solution that will somehow satisfy for everyone. But before she can do that, she's going to have to find a way to get through to Steve, whom Kate fears may be more troubled than he seems.
Challenging as it is getting through to Steve, the Jenks case does provide Kate with an excuse to put off something even more unpleasant: the reading of her father's will with Spencer and Lauren. But no matter how busy (or reluctant) she might be to face the truth, Kate can't dodge the will-and its surprising contents-forever.
