It's just a normal day on the beat for Roman and Burgess as they tool around in their squad car. Burgess feels a little restless and wonders out loud if turning down an opportunity with Intelligence was the wrong decision. Her self-doubt takes a back seat when she spots a shady individual enter a nearby warehouse - does he have a gun? She pounds on the warehouse door only to see a dead body answers it, followed by a man with a gun. The gunman confiscates their weapons and pulls Roman into the warehouse, slams the door - and Burgess flinches at the sound of gunfire.

Burgess sneaks inside from the back and discovers more bodies, including the gunman... and a wounded Roman, bleeding from the head. The gunman awakens while she attempts to help Roman - and he overtakes her quickly. But his victory is short lived - another wounded criminal shoots him dead, and trains his weapon on Burgess next. She attempts to reason with him, but he's certain this is where he will die. In any case, Burgess keeps him talking and they chat about prison, the corrupt police system, politics, and their connection finally allows him to reveal his name: Aubrey.

Aubrey seems willing to allow Burgess and a barely conscious Roman to leave on their own volition - until two more thugs show up on the scene. Aubrey soon collapses to the ground and the thugs revoke any deal he made with the officers. The new demand? Fix Aubrey and assure he lives. Roman identifies Aubrey's condition as a collapsed lung and sends one of the thugs for makeshift supplies. When he returns, tensions continue to rise as one of the other thugs, Orion, threatens to kill Aubrey right there just for revealing his real name.

They manage to avoid another murder, and Roman gives Burgess a step-by-step guide on how to proceed with the hackneyed procedure. It's an incredible moment when she succeeds and Aubrey regains the ability to breathe, but their celebration ends with gunshots - Orion murders Aubrey and the other thug, his cousin.

Meanwhile, Intelligence slogs through a thorough Taser certification training session. Although Lindsay revels in the opportunity to tase Halstead, Ruzek takes offense to the laborious process - he and Burgess have plans. He leaves her a series of voicemail messages, and after a total lack of response, Ruzek starts to worry. He informs Voight when Platt confirms the uncertain whereabouts of Burgess and Roman, and Voight in turn ropes Intelligence into the situation. The whole team heads out in search of their missing patrol officers.

Back at the warehouse, Burgess and Roman hide from Orion in the stairwell. Burgess eventually gets the jump on him and knocks away his gun. They both tumble down the stairs and soon enough engage in a struggle for the weapon. Roman lunges for the gun, but Orion beats him to it. and seconds before the ruthless criminal pulls the trigger in Roman's face, Burgess leaps up and stabs Orion in the neck. He dies on the stairs and, after one last encounter with a straggler, Intelligence arrives to lock down the operation. Roman announces that Burgess saved his life, and later Commander Fischer says the same. All of District 21 applauds - initiated by Platt, who still can't believe Burgess stopped an entire smuggling ring without her gun or backup.

In private with Ruzek, Burgess breaks down from sheer exhaustion, the reality of her ordeal finally upon her. But when that moment passes, she seems stronger, more confident - and ready for anything that life might throw her way.
