AceShowbiz - Kevin McKidd, known for his role on Grey's Anatomy, is set to headline the upcoming ITV thriller The Only Suspect. The drama is adapted by Simon Ashdown, who previously worked on Trigger Point, from the novel by Louise Candlish.
This project marks McKidd's first major acting role since departing from the medical drama series, where he was both a cast member and director. Having joined Grey's Anatomy in 2008, McKidd officially announced his exit just last month.
Produced by Red Planet Pictures, a Fremantle company, The Only Suspect is set against the backdrop of a leafy London suburb. The story centers around Alex and Beth, a devoted couple whose seemingly perfect life conceals a dark secret. The narrative unfolds in two timelines: the present day and the mid-1990s during the height of Cool Britannia in Camden.
The plot synopsis reveals that during a scorching summer in 1995, a young man buries a body amid a violent storm. Three decades later, another heatwave strikes a changed world. The abandoned railway track where the body was concealed, located behind Alex and Beth’s street, is being transformed into a nature trail led by Beth. What is celebrated as a community triumph threatens to unravel everything for Alex — because he is the young man who buried the body.
The Only Suspect aims to explore themes of obsession, deception, betrayal, the repercussions of youthful recklessness, and secrets that refuse to remain buried.
McKidd, who is also known for his role in Trainspotting, described the project as feeling like a “coming home.” He expressed enthusiasm for the complex and multi-layered character of Alex and looked forward to collaborating with Farren, the team at Red Planet Pictures, and a talented ensemble of British actors.
The four-part drama will be executive produced by Belinda Campbell and Tom Mullens for Red Planet Pictures, alongside Polly Hill and Huw Kennair-Jones representing ITV. Fremantle will handle international distribution.
Filming is scheduled to begin in London this spring, promising a gripping addition to ITV’s thriller lineup with a potent mix of suspense and emotional depth.
