AceShowbiz - Perfect Crown has quickly become Disney+’s most successful Korean drama debut, setting a new viewership record globally within just five days of its April 10 release. The romantic comedy series has captivated audiences worldwide, becoming the platform’s highest-rated Korean series premiere to date.
Disney+ confirmed the milestone on Thursday but did not disclose specific viewer numbers. Instead, the company emphasized that Perfect Crown ranks as the No. 1 most-watched Korean drama launch across the streaming service’s international markets.
The show simultaneously airs in South Korea on MBC during the prestigious Friday-Saturday prime-time slot. It presents a unique alternate reality where South Korea remains a constitutional monarchy. The story follows Seong Hui-ju, portrayed by rising star IU, who is the ambitious heiress of a major conglomerate but struggles with her commoner background. Opposite her, Byeon Woo-seok plays Grand Prince I-AN, the king’s second son who has a royal title but lacks power.
The plot thickens when societal pressures force these two disparate figures into a marriage of convenience. What begins as a pragmatic arrangement soon reveals complex emotional layers neither anticipated, blending romance with political intrigue.
The chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo-seok has generated significant buzz. IU is one of Korea’s top entertainment icons, fresh off acclaim for her lead role in Netflix’s award-winning drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. Meanwhile, Byeon Woo-seok rose to prominence following his breakout performance in the 2024 tvN hit Lovely Runner. The two actors previously appeared together nearly a decade ago in SBS’s Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), when Byeon was still an emerging actor.
Directed by Park Joon-hwa, known for successful rom-com and fantasy dramas such as What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and Alchemy of Souls, Perfect Crown is penned by writer Yoo Ji-won. The creative team’s expertise is evident in the series’ blend of heartfelt romance and captivating fantasy elements.
Perfect Crown streams internationally on Disney+ and is available on Hulu in the United States. Shortly after its premiere, it entered Disney+’s Global Top 10 and has trended in over 40 countries, underscoring its wide-reaching appeal.
This hit arrives as Disney+ intensifies efforts to build a robust slate of Korean content, aiming to compete with Netflix’s decade-long dominance in the K-drama genre. The platform has seen success with the 2023 action-thriller Moving and continues to expand its Korean offerings with titles like A Shop for Killers, Gangnam B-Side, and Light Shop.
Looking ahead, Disney+ has several high-profile Korean projects in development, including a second season of A Shop for Killers, the star-studded fantasy romance The Remarried Empress featuring Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon, and Lee Jong-suk, as well as The Koreans, a remake of FX’s The Americans starring Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min.
New episodes of Perfect Crown are released every Friday and Saturday at 11:20 p.m. Korean Standard Time. The series will continue airing through May 16, maintaining strong momentum as it unfolds.
