AceShowbiz - Film Independent has officially appointed Juan Devis as its new president, the nonprofit arts organization announced on Tuesday. Devis previously served as a producer and chief creative officer at a Los Angeles media company known for managing PBS SoCal and KCET, two public broadcast stations.

This appointment concludes the search to replace Josh Welsh, who led the organization as president since 2012 until his passing in December following a battle with cancer. Following Welsh’s death, Brenda Robinson, the board chair, had stepped in as Acting President to guide the organization.

Film Independent is renowned for its year-round grant programs, mentorship labs, screening series, and its flagship event, the annual Film Independent Spirit Awards. The organization plays a vital role in supporting independent filmmakers and fostering creativity within the film community.

With Juan Devis at the helm, Film Independent intends to continue its mission of empowering filmmakers and expanding opportunities within the arts. His background in media and creative leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives as the organization moves forward.

This leadership change comes at a significant time, as Film Independent recently launched a new fellowship program for international filmmakers, supported by a substantial $1.1 million legacy gift from the Samuel and Ruth P. Cohen Estate, further strengthening its commitment to diverse storytelling.
