AceShowbiz - Venom starring Tom Hardy continues to demonstrate its global popularity as it surges back onto streaming charts worldwide. The 2018 sci-fi action film earned an impressive $856.1 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful superhero spin-offs in recent years.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom features Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes bonded with an alien symbiote. The film’s story revolves around Brock’s efforts to expose unethical human experimentation led by the Life Foundation’s Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed.
The film’s box office success was driven largely by international audiences, with over $640 million of its total gross coming from overseas markets. This global enthusiasm has translated to significant streaming viewership, especially outside the United States where Venom is available on HBO Max. The movie recently climbed to second place on HBO Max’s film charts in eleven countries. Meanwhile, in the U.S., where the film streams on Disney+, it has not achieved the same chart dominance.
The strong international performance of Venom helped solidify the franchise, leading to two sequels and inspiring Sony to explore additional Spider-Man universe characters.
In February, it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation is developing a new animated Venom film. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are attached to this upcoming project. A writers’ room has been assembled to craft the story, with producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach returning.
Venom remains a major draw on current streaming platforms, demonstrating the lasting impact of the 2018 release. Fans can watch the movie on HBO Max internationally and on Disney+ in the United States.
