AceShowbiz - Avatar franchise fans have reasons to stay cautiously optimistic as the release dates for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 remain flexible, according to recent statements from the film’s producer.
Despite Disney currently listing these sequels for December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively, those schedules are far from finalized. Producer Rae Sanchini informed Inverse in a recent interview that the dates are "tentative" and could be subject to change depending on upcoming production decisions.
Sanchini emphasized that the team is actively working on the filming plans, budgeting, and building new pipelines for the sequels. “Right now we’re figuring out the schedule. We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead,” she said.
She also revealed that the scripts for the two upcoming movies are complete and described them as “brilliant.” “As far as I’m concerned, we’re heading forward,” she confirmed, indicating strong confidence in the continuation of the series.
This news comes after a period of uncertainty following the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025. Director James Cameron had openly admitted that the future of the fourth and fifth installments hinged on the financial success of the third sequel. The concern arose because the box office returns for Fire and Ash—while substantial—marked a decline compared to previous entries.
The first Avatar film, released in 2009, became a monumental success, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide and securing its place as the highest-grossing film ever at the time. It surpassed Cameron's earlier blockbuster, Titanic. The movie also received mostly positive critical reception, holding an 81% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The long wait between the original and the first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, spanned 13 years. Released in 2022, the sequel grossed $2.3 billion globally, surpassing Titanic to rank as the third-highest grossing film behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Cameron notably filmed both The Way of Water and Fire and Ash simultaneously, reducing the gap between their theatrical releases.
Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $1.4 billion, a figure that would be celebrated for most films but was perceived as a dip given the franchise’s previous box office benchmarks. This installment was also the costliest yet, with a reported production budget of $400 million, raising questions about the financial viability of continuing with the high-budget sequels.
At one point, Cameron himself acknowledged the possibility that the franchise might conclude after the third film, despite having already filmed parts of Avatar 4. However, more recent developments have suggested that there is a strong chance the saga will move forward. About a month ago, the director indicated optimism about receiving the green light for continuation, and producer Sanchini shared with ScreenRant that production on Avatar 4 could commence soon.
For fans eager to revisit the world of Pandora, Avatar: Fire and Ash is now accessible on digital platforms, offering viewers an opportunity to watch from home. Additionally, the DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD versions are scheduled for release on May 19, 2026.
While Disney has yet to announce a Disney+ streaming date for Fire and Ash, the pattern set by The Way of Water—which became available on the platform in June 2023, roughly six months following its theatrical debut—suggests a similar timeline could be expected for the third movie’s streaming release, potentially in summer 2026.
Looking further ahead, the official release dates remain December 21, 2029, for Avatar 4 and December 19, 2031, for Avatar 5. However, as Sanchini noted, these dates hinge on finalizing budgets and filming schedules, which will determine if Disney proceeds as planned or opts for delays.
Summarizing the current status, the Avatar franchise stands at a crossroads. The commercial performance of recent films has sparked debate about the feasibility of continuing the saga at such a high production cost. Yet, the creative team remains committed and hopeful, with scripts in hand and production planning underway.
As the filmmakers prepare to finalize logistical and financial details, audiences can expect further announcements regarding the fate and scheduling of these highly anticipated sequels.
