AceShowbiz - YouTube has become a fertile ground for emerging horror talents who have found unique ways to captivate audiences. Among these creators, the Philippou brothers—Danny and Michael—made a significant impact with their breakout hit Talk to Me and its acclaimed follow-up, Bring Her Back. Similarly, Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach gained attention this year by adapting the indie game Iron Lung into a feature film that performed well at the box office.
Beyond these well-known creators, many horror visionaries have built substantial followings by directly uploading their work to YouTube. Notable examples include Remy Abode with the analog horror series Gemini Home Entertainment, Alex Kister’s The Mandela Catalogue, and Dylan Clark’s short film Portrait of God, which is being developed into a feature with production support from Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele.
One of the most remarkable success stories is Kane Parsons, known online as Kane Pixels. He created the Backrooms web series, inspired by the original creepypasta and its accompanying eerie photo. Launched in 2022, the first episode alone has amassed over 73 million views on YouTube. Since then, Parsons has released 22 additional short films exploring the mysterious labyrinth known as the Backrooms, a surreal and hostile complex existing just outside reality.
The series centers on the organization Async, which investigates the Backrooms and attempts to document the strange phenomena and dangers within. As more individuals vanish into the endless maze of yellow walls and buzzing fluorescent lights, the mystery deepens. Now, less than two months before its theatrical debut, Parsons’ vision is set to expand into a feature film, with A24 releasing a new, unsettling trailer that offers a glimpse into the project.
Details about the film adaptation have been carefully guarded. The official synopsis reveals only that the story begins when "a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom." The initial teaser showcased the surreal, liminal spaces of the Backrooms, narrated by a voice describing the bizarre, shifting hallways. The latest trailer intensifies the horror, exposing the vast, incomprehensible threats lurking within this alternate dimension, blending fascination with overwhelming terror.
For his first feature film, Kane Parsons received significant support from industry veterans. Among them is James Wan, a renowned director and writer best known for the Saw franchise and other horror successes, who produced the film under his Atomic Monster banner. Additional production partners include Chernin Entertainment and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment. The screenplay was written by Will Soodik, known for his work on Ash vs. Evil Dead.
The film boasts a strong cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with supporting roles filled by Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. During production, Duplass expressed great confidence in Parsons’ abilities despite the director’s young age, noting Parsons as the youngest filmmaker to helm an A24 feature.
In an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Duplass praised Parsons’ command of the set and his clarity of vision: "I can’t say anything about the story, and I really do want to protect it for Kane. His mind is a backroom, and a beautiful place, a beautiful, liminal space that is somehow not human and beyond all of us." He continued, "I have always fancied myself someone who loves to mentor young filmmakers and be around them, and I think that’s part of the reason why I got that gig was thinking, ‘You know what? Kane is 19 and he’s directing a huge studio movie for the first time. It’d probably be good to have Mark around, who’s really good at mentoring people.’ And I was fully ready to do that, and got there, and I was like, ‘This guy is so in charge and knows every detail down to the last thing.’ He was so patient and good with the actors, with us. It was so impressive to watch him command that set in a lovely and humble way.”
Duplass admitted that the final product remains a mystery until release but affirmed his trust in Parsons’ leadership: "I don’t know how it’s all going to come together. We’re going to have to see. But I feel very, very comfortable in his hands."
The Backrooms film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 29, 2026. Fans of the web series and horror enthusiasts alike can anticipate a chilling cinematic experience that expands the haunting universe Kane Parsons first brought to life on YouTube.
