AceShowbiz - The latest installment of 9-1-1: Nashville offered a deeper dive into the complex relationships surrounding Capt. Don Hart (Chris O'Donnell). Episode 11, titled "Don Begins," focuses on Don preparing to testify at a parole hearing for the man convicted of killing his family during his childhood. The episode intricately explores the dynamics between Don, his ex Dixie (played by LeAnn Rimes), and his current wife Blythe (Jessica Capshaw).
Through a series of flashbacks, viewers witness how Dixie entered Don’s life at a pivotal moment after the traumatic loss of his parents and sister. Their shared history reveals how they mutually inspired each other’s ambitions: Don’s firefighting career and Dixie’s pursuit of singing. The episode highlights the bittersweet nature of their connection, showing how their dreams ultimately caused them to drift apart, paving the way for Don’s marriage to Blythe. Yet, during a brief separation from Blythe, Don reconnected with Dixie, which resulted in the birth of their son Blue (Hunter McVey).
LeAnn Rimes shared with TheWrap that Episode 11 offers audiences a fresh perspective on Dixie. “It gives the audience such a different view of Dixie... I think people will have more of an open heart toward her and her situation,” she said. Rimes noted that although Dixie’s sympathetic portrayal in this episode is temporary, it adds important nuance to a character often depicted with villainous traits this season.
The episode exposes the layered, sometimes dysfunctional relationships Don maintains with both women. Despite her flaws, Dixie plays a crucial role in helping Don confront his lingering pain and anger. She encourages him to move past his resentment toward the man who destroyed his family, even if Don remains firm that the man does not deserve parole.
Beyond the emotional drama, Episode 11 also gave LeAnn Rimes an opportunity to showcase her musical talents. She penned an original song titled “Wild Things Run,” performed by a younger version of Dixie as she is discovered, marking a pivotal moment in the character’s journey.
In an interview, LeAnn Rimes reflected on her experience joining the ABC spinoff as a series regular. “After three decades in this business, to have a first is very, very rare. For this to be the first series that I’ve been on, it’s been a blast,” she said. Rimes appreciates the complexity of Dixie, describing her as “layered” and delighting in exploring the character’s darker, manipulative sides, which she believes stem from Dixie’s survival instincts as a single mother.
When asked about the backstory revealed in the episode, particularly the long-standing bond between Dixie and Don, LeAnn Rimes admitted she was unaware of much of it before filming. “It’s great to now know the origin stories of these characters because it so much informs how we play them out in the future.” She believes this history allows audiences to view Dixie with more sympathy, adding, “For just a moment, there’s a breath of, ‘I feel for her.’”
During the flashbacks, viewers hear snippets of “Wild Things Run,” the original song LeAnn Rimes wrote for the show. She revealed how the songwriting process came about: “When I learned they were looking for a song for Dixie that would catapult her career, I approached Rashad [Raisani], our showrunner, and said, ‘I really want to take a stab at this.’”
LeAnn Rimes described receiving an early draft of the montage to inspire her writing. The title “Wild Things Run” came to her as a perfect metaphor for the two characters’ wild spirits and their cyclical relationship—run toward each other, then apart, only to reunite again, echoing Dixie’s recurring line about the universe bringing them back together.
“I told Rashad, ‘This is what I do for a living, normally. So just use me,’ and he said, ‘Absolutely,’” she recalled. Writing the song gave her another way to connect deeply with Dixie beyond acting, embedding herself further into the character’s emotional world.
Despite looming deadlines, LeAnn Rimes and co-writer Darrel Brown completed “Wild Things Run” swiftly via Zoom, capturing the mood and tempo the showrunner envisioned—a power ballad with a driving rhythm. “It was a pretty seamless process, but there’s stress because so many people depend on the song to encapsulate all this emotion,” she explained.
Ultimately, LeAnn Rimes is proud of the final product and believes it authentically represents the characters and their story. She expressed satisfaction that the song sounds like a potential hit, fitting its role as the track that leads to Dixie’s discovery.
Throughout the series, the recurring reunions between Dixie and Don sustain Dixie’s feelings for him and fuel her rivalry with Blythe. LeAnn Rimes praised the chemistry with her co-stars, stating, “I love them both so much, and Jess and I have the best time together.” The dynamic between the three characters brings additional layers of intrigue and emotional tension to the show.
