Will Bridgerton recast the Duke and Duchess? Explore why Daphne and Simon are missing from the latest season's major family events.

AceShowbiz - The latest season of Bridgerton has sparked considerable discussion about the absence of the original lead couple, Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset. As the show's narrative continues to focus on the romantic journeys of the Bridgerton siblings, viewers have noticed that Daphne and Simon have not appeared since season 1, prompting speculation about whether the series might recast these iconic roles to keep the characters present during major family events.
Season 4 of Bridgerton centers around two significant family milestones: the funeral of Francesca's husband and the wedding of Benedict and Sophie. While the season features appearances from the couple known as "Kanthony" (Anthony and Kate), the absence of Daphne and Simon is notable. Their presence is only indirectly acknowledged through mentions, such as when the Bridgerton matriarch references the Duke of Hastings' title at a critical moment.
When Variety inquired about the possibility of recasting these characters for future seasons—especially considering that Bridgerton has been renewed for seasons 5 and 6—showrunner Jess Brownell provided a definitive response. Brownell expressed a strong reluctance to recast, emphasizing respect for the original actors' contributions: "We are not interested in recasting the characters. I think it would feel like a disservice to everything Regé and Phoebe set up in season 1, and all the beautiful work they put into those characters."
Brownell further explained that the production team would prefer to bring the actors back only when there is a substantial storyline for them. She added, "To have them come back to say a line at a funeral and just prove that they were there, it wouldn't feel right for many reasons." Despite this, Brownell affirmed that the characters are still very much part of the show's world, stating, "They're hypothetically there; it's television. But we would love to find a time to bring everyone back at some point in the future."
This clarification confirms that while the characters of Daphne and Simon have not been physically represented in recent seasons, the showrunners have not forgotten their importance. Their names have appeared sporadically in season 4, maintaining their presence within the Bridgerton family’s story arc.
Regarding the actors themselves, Regé-Jean Page has not returned since the first season. It was revealed that Page originally signed on for just one season, and although he was offered a chance to return for the second season, he declined, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Since departing Bridgerton, Page has concentrated on his film career, notably starring in the fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the upcoming romantic comedy You, Me, & Tuscany.
On the other hand, Phoebe Dynevor, who portrayed Daphne, played a more prominent role in season 2 by assisting Anthony Bridgerton in understanding his feelings for Kate Sharma. This involvement likely fits the description of the kind of "meaty" narrative arc that Brownell referred to. However, Dynevor has not appeared in seasons 3 or 4. During the filming of season 4, Dynevor expressed willingness to return to the Regency world of Bridgerton. Like Page, she has shifted focus towards film projects, including Netflix's psychological thriller Fair Play. Additionally, she has been cast in the lead role for the film adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestselling romance novel Beach Read, as announced by Deadline.
Looking ahead, many questions remain about what Bridgerton season 5 might hold. Showrunner Brownell has yet to reveal whether Francesca Bridgerton will find a second great love or if Eloise Bridgerton’s evolving views on companionship will lead her toward a romantic relationship. Fans are eager to see how the series will continue to explore these personal journeys and whether other Bridgerton siblings will find their happy endings.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Daphne and Simon’s potential return, audiences have expressed a strong desire to see the previously married Bridgerton siblings—Daphne, Anthony, Colin, and Benedict—along with their spouses, come together to support their sisters as they navigate new romantic chapters.
All episodes of Bridgerton season 4 are currently available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, continuing to captivate viewers with its blend of romance, drama, and Regency-era intrigue.
