AceShowbiz - Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers in the upcoming reboot, has opened up about why Hulu decided not to move forward with the new series, Buffy: New Sunnydale. The actress revealed that a key executive’s lack of support played a major role in the project’s cancellation.
In an interview with People, Gellar explained that the decision to halt the reboot came as a shock to everyone involved. “Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming,” she said, emphasizing how unexpected the outcome was for the cast and crew. She went on to blame a specific executive who openly admitted to not being a fan of the original series and had never watched it in full. This executive’s attitude created an uphill battle for the team from the very beginning.
“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” Gellar shared. She pointed out how difficult it was to fight for a beloved property like Buffy when a key decision-maker wasn’t invested in the source material. Gellar also mentioned that this lack of enthusiasm was especially hard on herself and pilot director Chloé Zhao, who was passionate about the project.
The reboot was intended to introduce a new generation of characters, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast as Nova, a fresh slayer training under the guidance of Buffy. The pilot also featured a diverse supporting cast, including Faly Rakotohavana as the endearing Hugo, Ava Jean as the do-gooder Larkin, Sarah Bock as the devout churchgoer Gracie, Daniel Di Tomasso as Nova’s father Abe, Jack Cutmore-Scott as teacher Mr. Burke, and Kingston Vernes as Nova’s love interest Carson.
Beyond the cancellation itself, Gellar expressed disappointment regarding the timing of Hulu’s announcement. She received the news on Friday, March 11, mere moments before taking the stage with her co-stars from the film Ready or Not at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas. The timing was particularly painful because it coincided with pilot director Chloé Zhao attending the Oscars as a Best Director nominee for her film Hamnet.
“No one saw this coming, including the head of Searchlight,” Gellar noted, highlighting the unexpected nature of the cancellation within the larger Searchlight Pictures and Searchlight Television umbrella. She added, “It’s also the weekend of [pilot director Chloé Zhao] going to the Oscars as a Best Director nominee for ‘Hamnet.’ For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is... that says something.”
While Hulu has passed on moving forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale, reports indicate there remains considerable affection for the intellectual property within the streaming service. Hulu is reportedly still considering what future steps might look like for the franchise. This leaves the door open for the possibility that the Buffy universe could be revived in some form down the line.
For now, fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are left disappointed but hopeful, as this beloved series may not be gone for good. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s candid insights shed light on the challenges faced behind the scenes and the complicated dynamics that can influence the fate of even the most cherished reboots.
