One Piece Season 3 promises a new tone: grounded, emotional, yet wacky. Emily Rudd hints at the Straw Hats' deeper journey.

AceShowbiz - One Piece star Emily Rudd has revealed that the upcoming third season of the Netflix adaptation will adopt a noticeably different tone compared to the first two seasons. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s acclaimed manga, One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy and his diverse pirate crew as they embark on a quest to find the legendary treasure called the One Piece.
The Netflix live-action series features Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, alongside Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar. Since its premiere in 2023, the show has been lauded for successfully capturing the adventurous spirit and rich world-building of the original anime and manga while translating it into live action.
In an interview with Collider, Rudd hinted that season 3 will maintain the franchise’s signature wacky energy but will also dive into a more grounded and emotionally resonant story. According to her, the narrative in this new season might strike a chord with audiences in a more direct and relevant way than before.
“I know this is crazy to say about One Piece, and it still has the wild, wacky elements, but the core story we’re telling in Season 3 is grounded,” Rudd explained. “More than in Seasons 1 and 2, the through-line feels like something people in America and worldwide can relate to. People might see themselves or their experiences in it. It’s very timely, and hopefully a story of hope for everyone.”
While One Piece is well-known for its fantastical settings, exaggerated characters, and imaginative worlds, Rudd’s remarks suggest that the upcoming season will focus more on the human and emotional aspects of the story.
The anticipated tonal shift is likely linked to the storyline expected to be adapted in season 3, widely believed to be the Alabasta saga, one of the most pivotal arcs in the original manga and anime. In this saga, the Straw Hat Pirates journey to the desert kingdom of Alabasta, accompanied by Princess Vivi, played by Charithra Chandran, to prevent a civil war sparked by the secretive criminal group Baroque Works.
The arc centers on the antagonist Crocodile, the enigmatic leader of Baroque Works, whose political scheming threatens to throw the kingdom into turmoil. With themes of leadership, misinformation, rebellion, and loyalty, the Alabasta saga introduces weightier political and emotional stakes, which could explain the more grounded tone despite the ongoing fantastical elements.
Season 2 of One Piece follows Luffy, Nami, Zoro (Mackenyu), Usopp (Gibson), and Sanji (Taz Skylar) as they venture into the Grand Line, a dangerous and mysterious sea full of strange islands and powerful enemies. The crew gains new allies and faces formidable challenges while pursuing the world’s greatest treasure.
Each season has expanded the scope of the One Piece universe by introducing fresh islands, characters, and conflicts, gradually leading to more significant battles across the Grand Line. Season 3’s focus on the Alabasta saga is expected to elevate the scale and stakes considerably, offering fans a deeper and more nuanced narrative.
Rudd’s comments indicate that while fans can expect the familiar humor, intense action, and larger-than-life characters that define One Piece, the new season will also place a stronger emphasis on the emotional and political consequences of the story’s events. If successful, season 3 could represent one of the most impactful chapters in Netflix’s ambitious live-action adaptation of Oda’s legendary pirate journey.
Currently, One Piece season 2 is available for streaming on Netflix, setting the stage for the much-anticipated third season.
One Piece season 3 is expected to premiere on Netflix with showrunners Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, and Joe Tracz continuing to guide the series.
