AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated sequel to the 2024 animated hit The Wild Robot, titled The Wild Robot Escapes, has officially been announced, along with new details about its story and creative team. TheWrap reports that Troy Quane will direct the follow-up, with Heidi Jo Gilbert joining as co-director. While Chris Sanders, who wrote and directed the original film, will not return as director, he is involved again as the screenplay writer. Producer Jeff Hermann is also confirmed to be back on the project.
The original The Wild Robot movie introduced audiences to Roz, a robot stranded on an island who adapts to survive alongside the local wildlife. The film, based on Peter Brown’s novel, earned critical acclaim and notable award nominations, including Best Animated Feature nods at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Although it lost out to Flow at those ceremonies, it secured a Critics' Choice Award win. Financially, the film was a major success, debuting at number one with $35.7 million in its opening weekend and eventually grossing $334.5 million globally. It also received glowing reviews, holding a 97% critic score and a 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, praised particularly for its emotional depth and heartfelt storytelling.
Chris Sanders first hinted at the sequel’s development back in 2024, despite juggling several projects including writing the live-action sequel to Lilo & Stitch. The promotion of Heidi Jo Gilbert to co-director comes after her role as story team lead on the first film and her work on other DreamWorks animations such as Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and The Croods: A New Age. Meanwhile, Troy Quane brings extensive experience, having contributed to titles like The Peanuts Movie, Ice Age: Collision Course, and serving as co-director on Spies in Disguise and Nimona.
The Wild Robot Escapes will adapt the second book in Brown’s trilogy, focusing on Roz and her companion Brightbill as they attempt to escape from Hilltop Farm. The series includes three novels: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects.
The original film featured an impressive voice cast, including Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, Randy Thom, and the late Catherine O’Hara. Currently, The Wild Robot is streaming on Netflix but is scheduled to leave the platform on March 23 and will then move to Peacock. Details about the voice cast for The Wild Robot Escapes have not yet been released, nor has DreamWorks announced a release date for the new film.
Fans of the original can look forward to a continuation of Roz’s heartfelt journey, guided by a talented creative team and supported by strong source material. With its proven track record of critical and financial success, The Wild Robot Escapes is poised to capture audiences once again when it debuts in theaters.
