AceShowbiz - Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has expanded his successful franchise with a new sequel series, Marshals, which has made an immediate impact on television ratings. While the original Yellowstone series concluded in 2024, Sheridan has been steadily building a larger universe around the Dutton family saga, starting with the 2021 prequel 1883, and now launching the first sequel series focused on one of the show's key characters.
The spinoff centers on Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, who steps away from the Yellowstone Ranch to embark on a new path as a U.S. Marshal. Marshals premiered on CBS to an impressive 9.52 million viewers on its debut day, marking the highest premiere audience for a TV series since the 2018 launch of the FBI procedural, which drew 10 million viewers. This milestone also outperformed many of the seasonal premieres of Yellowstone itself and surpassed the finale of Dancing With the Stars, which attracted 9.43 million viewers.
This strong debut underscores the continued popularity of the Yellowstone franchise. While its earlier prequels, 1883 and 1923, streamed on Paramount+, Marshals represents a significant step by airing on one of the "Big 3" broadcast networks—CBS—bringing the franchise to an even wider television audience. The total viewership tally is expected to grow further once the series is available for streaming on Paramount+.
The storyline of Marshals follows Kayce, an ex-Navy SEAL, as he leverages his rugged cowboy skills and military training to combat crime across Montana. Alongside his law enforcement duties, Kayce faces personal struggles, including post-traumatic stress disorder and grieving a profound loss.
A pivotal and emotional plot development for the series involved the absence of Kayce’s wife, Monica, originally portrayed by Kelsey Asbille on Yellowstone. Unable to continue in the role for the spinoff, the show’s creative team, including showrunner Spencer Hudnut and Grimes, decided to address her absence by writing Monica's character off through a cancer storyline. This decision set the tone for Kayce’s journey in Marshals, focusing on his grief and resilience.
Hudnut explained to The Hollywood Reporter that killing off Monica was not a casual decision but rather a respectful way to move forward given Asbille’s unavailability. This narrative choice adds depth to Kayce’s character development in the new series.
Despite Monica’s departure, Marshals brings back several familiar faces from the Yellowstone universe, including Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, Gil Birmingham as Chief Thomas Rainwater, and Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton. The show also introduces new cast members to the franchise, such as Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Tatmanka Means, and Ash Santos, expanding the world Sheridan has created.
Marshals airs on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+. Fans of the Yellowstone universe are encouraged to share their thoughts about the spinoff on the ComicBook Forum, where discussions about the new series and its impact on the franchise are already underway.
