AceShowbiz - Tom Hanks is set to portray a U.S. President for the first time in his career. According to a report, Hanks has been cast as Abraham Lincoln in an upcoming film adaptation of the prize-winning novel Lincoln in the Bardo.
The book, written by George Saunders and published in 2017, won the Booker Prize that same year. It explores President Lincoln's grief following the death of his 11-year-old son, Willie. The film adaptation will be directed by Duke Johnson, who co-directed the Oscar-nominated animated film Anomalisa.
The project will be a unique blend of live-action and stop-motion animation. Tom Hanks will portray a live-action version of Lincoln, while the innovative filmmaking style will be used to delve into the president's emotional state and the story's supernatural elements. The narrative is expected to take place over a single night as Lincoln visits the "bardo," a transitional realm between life and death.
Tom Hanks will also produce the film through his company, Playtone. Other producers include Duke Johnson, Gary Goetzman, Paul Young, and Devon Young Rabinowitz. The author, George Saunders, will serve as an executive producer. The movie will be made by Starburns Industries and is scheduled to film in London, England.
This role marks a significant addition to Hanks's repertoire of portraying real-life figures, which includes Captain Phillips and Mister Rogers. The film also joins other notable portrayals of Lincoln, such as Daniel Day-Lewis's performance in Steven Spielberg's 2012 biopic. The blend of live-action and stop-motion aims to capture the novel's experimental nature and visually emphasize the themes of loss and grief.
