AceShowbiz - The Bluff is transforming the pirate movie landscape with its fresh approach to the genre. Directed by Frank E. Flowers and co-written by Flowers and Joe Ballarini, this R-rated action thriller stars Karl Urban as Captain Connor, a pirate on a quest for vengeance against the one who betrayed him, Ercell Bodden, portrayed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
In the film, Ercell is a former pirate now living a secluded life on a remote island. She is fiercely protective of her family and their way of life, willing to go to extreme lengths, including violence, to safeguard them. The story combines intense action with emotional depth, redefining what audiences expect from pirate films.
At the recent premiere in Los Angeles, ScreenRant spoke with the cast about how the film is reshaping the pirate genre. Safia Oakley-Green, who plays Elizabeth Bodden, Ercell’s sister-in-law, highlighted the unique intensity of the film’s setting and tone. She described the blend of vast beaches, turbulent seas, passionate conflicts, and gritty, sometimes graphic scenes, along with romantic moments, as ingredients for a compelling pirate movie experience.
“I think it’s because they are enormous. It’s like, beaches, it’s the sea — everything’s so intense. The weather is so intense. And everyone’s really passionate, because they’re fighting for something that they really believe in, and then it’s really gory, and it’s also really hot, ’cause everyone’s kissing and stuff,” Oakley-Green explained, emphasizing how these elements come together to create a captivating story.
She also expressed a desire for more pirate movies, especially those centered around women. Oakley-Green hopes for a sequel that would continue the journey of Ercell, Elizabeth, and other characters like Vedanten Naidoo’s, envisioning further adventures and character growth. “Pirate movies with women at the center — it’s something we need right now, so let’s make more of them,” she said.
The film’s female-led narrative is balanced with hard-hitting action and emotional realism. Veteran actor Temuera Morrison, who plays Quartier-maitre Lee, praised Chopra Jonas for her physicality and determination on set. He noted that her gritty performance and undeniable presence gave her the “X-factor” necessary to embody Ercell authentically.
“I was also so impressed with Priyanka, just how gritty she was, because she was very physical,” Morrison shared, highlighting the intense energy Chopra Jonas brought to the role.
Overall, The Bluff offers a bold new take on pirate cinema by focusing on complex, driven female leads and combining traditional swashbuckling thrills with raw emotion and realism. As the film makes waves on Amazon Prime, it stands as a promising step forward for the genre, inviting audiences to experience pirate stories from a fresh perspective.
