AceShowbiz - The acclaimed director behind one of The Last of Us' most celebrated episodes is setting his sights on a legendary sci-fi property. Per a report from Deadline, Emmy-nominated director Peter Hoar is developing a reboot of the cult British series Blake's 7.
The original Blake's 7, created by Terry Nation, aired on the BBC from 1978 to 1981. It followed a band of rebels and fugitives waging a desperate war against the oppressive Terran Federation. Despite a modest budget, its gritty tone and morally complex characters earned it a dedicated following, cementing its status as a foundational cult classic.
Hoar, who directed the critically lauded episode "Long, Long Time" for HBO's The Last of Us, will helm the project through his newly launched independent production company, Multitude Productions. The company, founded with partners Matthew Bouch and Jason Haigh-Ellery, aims to fill a gap in the UK's genre television landscape.
Matthew Bouch, who will executive produce, explicitly linked the project to recent shifts in the industry. "We're driven by our passions but also seeing that there is a gap in the market in the UK – particularly with the well-publicized dropping off of Doctor Who – for genre-based British IP," Bouch stated. This follows Disney+'s recent exit from its Doctor Who co-production deal.
The Multitude team, which also includes executive producer Lizzie Worsdell (The Carer), will soon begin shopping the Blake's 7 reboot to potential buyers. Bouch expressed a clear ambition for its home, saying he would "love it to go to the BBC." This would mark a return to the series' original broadcaster after 45 years.
Peter Hoar brings significant genre credentials to the project. Beyond his Emmy-nominated work on The Last of Us, his directing portfolio includes episodes of Doctor Who, The Umbrella Academy, Daredevil, and the BAFTA-winning miniseries It's a Sin. His skill with character-driven drama within high-concept settings makes him a compelling choice to revive the story of Blake and his crew.
For fans, a modern reboot of Blake's 7 presents an exciting opportunity. The core premise—a ragged, often contentious group battling a vast, authoritarian empire—resonates strongly with contemporary audiences. With today's visual effects capabilities and serialized storytelling, Hoar and his team could fully realize the epic scale and political intrigue the original series often aspired to.
While casting and a release timeline remain under wraps, the attachment of a director of Hoar's caliber signals a serious, high-profile attempt to reintroduce this seminal sci-fi story. The project aims to honor the dark, rebellious spirit of Nation's creation while reimagining it for a new generation of viewers.
