AceShowbiz - After more than three decades, the iconic martial arts manga series Baki is finally receiving a complete official English translation. This milestone is a significant moment for fans who have long awaited access to the entire franchise in their native language. Despite its massive global popularity—selling over 100 million copies worldwide—English-speaking readers have until now only had limited access through temporary translations or fan-made versions.
Baki is widely regarded as one of the most thrilling and extravagant sh?nen martial arts series ever created. It stands out within the genre thanks to its unique blend of realistic martial arts techniques and outrageous, larger-than-life action sequences. This combination has cemented its status as a beloved classic among anime and manga enthusiasts. Adding to the excitement, Netflix is currently adapting one of the franchise’s best arcs, Baki-Dou, further expanding its international appeal.
The franchise itself is composed of five main series: the original Baki the Grappler, Baki, Baki Hanma, Baki-Dou, and the ongoing Baki Rahen. Each storyline follows the protagonist, Baki, as he relentlessly trains to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma—known as “the Strongest Creature on Earth.” The series expertly combines grounded martial arts philosophy with highly exaggerated battles, creating a narrative that is both believable and wildly imaginative.
Until recently, English-speaking fans only had access to incomplete or unofficial translations, making it difficult to fully experience the franchise’s depth and evolution. That has changed thanks to the efforts of Kodama Tales, a dedicated publishing company now responsible for bringing the entire Baki saga to the American market. Currently, they are publishing the original Baki the Grappler series in English, with plans to release the complete collection.
Yuki Yokoi, one of the publishers involved in the project, emphasized the importance of finding a committed English-language publisher to handle the franchise. Given Baki’s extensive history and loyal fanbase, the decision to entrust Kodama Tales with the series reflects a long-term vision to properly introduce and maintain the franchise in the English-speaking world.
This official release marks a new era for Baki fans outside Japan, offering the opportunity to experience one of the greatest martial arts thrillers in its entirety for the first time. With the anime adaptations gaining momentum and the manga now fully accessible, Baki is poised to become a definitive staple in global martial arts entertainment.
