AceShowbiz - Josh Freese has opened up about his experience following his departure from the renowned rock band Foo Fighters, emphasizing that there’s no need for sympathy regarding his exit.
In May of last year, the Foo Fighters announced that Josh Freese was no longer their drummer. The musician expressed that he was both “shocked” and “disappointed” by the decision. Freese had joined the group as their touring drummer in 2023 after the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.
The band replaced him with Ilan Rubin, formerly of Nine Inch Nails, while Freese took a different path, joining Trent Reznor and his team on a North American tour in August.
Since parting ways with the Foo Fighters, Freese has also reunited with Weezer, a band he previously toured with between 2007 and 2012. He performed with them again during their South American tour last November.
In a recent interview with Modern Drummer, Josh Freese reflected candidly on his time with the Foo Fighters and what has followed since. When discussing his dismissal, he said, “I have a couple small theories, but I can’t really go into them right now.” Nevertheless, he shared how much he enjoyed the two years spent with the band, describing the members as kind and generous—until things changed unexpectedly.
Freese praised the leadership of frontman Dave Grohl, saying, “I liked playing with them. And I loved having Dave as a bandleader. I truly respect him so much as a drummer first and foremost.” He elaborated that Grohl’s drumming talent is the foundation of his artistry, and that being in a band led by such a phenomenal drummer was a unique and rewarding experience.
Reflecting on the sudden shift in dynamics, Freese admitted it was a mystery to him given the positive atmosphere they had shared. “One day it was nothing but laughs, we’re on stage and Dave’s looking at me every night like, ‘You’re killing it dude!!!’ And then it was just… over,” he said.
Recalling the day he learned about his firing, Freese described being with friends from A Perfect Circle and Primus on a day off. “Everyone was in shock and asking me what the hell happened,” he shared. Despite the surprise, he felt fortunate to be on tour with longtime friends and a great crew, playing music he enjoyed.
Since leaving Foo Fighters, Freese has kept busy with various projects and collaborations. When someone recently told him, “Man, you’ve had a tough year,” he responded with perspective, stating, “Really? So the Foo Fighters thing is over. Big deal, that was a blip.” He emphasized that he’s returned to where he feels he belongs and is embracing new opportunities without regret.
Josh Freese remains a highly respected drummer in the industry, known for his versatility and professionalism. His journey illustrates resilience and adaptability in the face of unexpected career changes, proving that endings can lead to fresh beginnings.
