Despite a few spin-offs and cameo appearances, the classic console experience has not returned since Ape Escape 3, which debuted in North America on January 17, 2006. Twenty years later, it's time for this beloved franchise to make a comeback.

Ape Escape first graced the gaming world in 1999, developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, later known as Japan Studio. At a time when the company was busy producing a variety of eclectic titles, ranging from Um Jammer Lammy to Wild Arms 2, Ape Escape stood out as a notable achievement. Drawing inspiration from the open-world design of Super Mario 64, the game offered a unique platforming experience that could rival Nintendo's best.

While the objective of capturing monkeys may seem straightforward, Ape Escape elevated this task through innovative gameplay mechanics. It was the first game on the PlayStation to necessitate a DualShock controller, utilizing both analog sticks for a dynamic control scheme. Throughout the adventure, players assume the role of protagonist Spike, who employs various gadgets and vehicles that demand separate control using the second stick. Despite the challenges that come with early PlayStation platformers, the transition to Ape Escape 2 on the PS2 felt refreshing. While the sequel may have sacrificed some atmosphere, it compensated with improved fluidity and gameplay experience.

As time has passed, the absence of a new mainline entry for the Ape Escape franchise is increasingly disappointing. The series may not align with the modern branding of cinematic action titles, but its charm and innovative design warrant a revival. With a rich legacy and a dedicated fanbase, it's high time for Sony to reintroduce Ape Escape to the gaming landscape.
