AceShowbiz - Netflix announced that it's renewed "The Boyfriend" for a second season on Monday, December 16 in Tokyo. The first season of "The Boyfriend", Japan's first same-sex reality show, premiered on July 9 and captured the hearts of viewers both domestically and internationally. It consistently featured in Netflix's weekly top-ten list of most-watched series for six consecutive weeks.
The show's format involves a cast of nine Japanese and East Asian men living together for a month in a luxury house called the "Green Room". There are no eliminations or competitions, and the show's focus is on building friendships and, possibly, finding love.
"In Season 1, we showed not just romance, but their friendship and meaningful connections with one another, which I believe touched the hearts of fans around the world," said Dai Ota, producer at Netflix Japan.
The renewal of "The Boyfriend" comes at a pivotal time for LGBT+ rights in Japan. A recent high court ruling declared the country's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, adding pressure on the government to address this issue.
The second season of "The Boyfriend" will introduce new participants and present their unique perspectives and journeys. It is expected to launch on Netflix in early 2025.
