AceShowbiz - Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun on "Squid Game", spoke with PEOPLE at the show's Los Angeles premiere, expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season. He hinted at "more surprises" and "games within games," describing them as "psychological warfare." Jung-jae also shared that the twists and turns in season 2 will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
Jung-jae expressed his gratitude for the fan support and global recognition the show has received. "Squid Game" became Netflix's most-watched series in 94 countries, reaching over 142 million member households and 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks.
Season 2 will follow Gi-hun as he re-enters the game, determined to dismantle the "Squid Game" organization from within. Despite the deaths of most characters in season 1, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at the possibility of bringing them back. New cast members joining season 2 include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun.
In an interview with io9, Jung-jae discussed Gi-hun's evolution in season 2. "It was much more challenging for me to portray the darker Gi-hun," he explained. "He's always tense and focused on achieving his goal of saving people." However, he also acknowledged Gi-hun's altruistic nature, which helped him connect with the character.
Fellow returning cast member Lee Seo-hwan, who plays Jung-bae, expressed his ease in returning to the role. He praised the seasoned actors in the cast, noting that their performances made his job easier.
"Squid Game" season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
