AceShowbiz - With James Gunn set to reboot the DC Universe, one might expect a brewing rivalry with Marvel Studios. However, Gunn's recent comments on Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU comeback as Doctor Doom reveal a tone of camaraderie rather than competition.
In an interview with the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Gunn praised Marvel's decision, stating, "I thought it was a smart move. I was excited about it." He added, "I also love Robert, so I think that's cool. I think it's a great idea. I think there's nobody better than him."
Gunn's enthusiasm is not surprising, as he previously drew inspiration from Downey's portrayal of Tony Stark in "Iron Man" when casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in "Guardians of the Galaxy".
Downey's casting as Doom raises questions about the character's connection to the MCU and the ongoing battle between DC Studios and Marvel Studios. However, Gunn has stated that he believes there is no rivalry between the two studios.
The release of "Superman" in 2025 and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps", featuring Doom, in 2026 will provide a direct comparison between the two cinematic universes. Gunn acknowledges the potential competition but remains optimistic about the future of both franchises.
