Broadway star Patti LuPone is facing criticism after being accused by Kecia Lewis of making racially insensitive remarks about the musical 'Hell's Kitchen.'

AceShowbiz - Kecia Lewis, who won a Tony Award for her role in "Hell's Kitchen", has released an open letter on social media calling out Patti LuPone for a series of actions that she believes constitute racial microaggressions. Lewis alleges that LuPone complained about the show's sound cues being "too loud" and requested that they be changed.

Lewis, speaking on behalf of herself only, notes that LuPone's actions have included reaching out to the theater owner to alter sound cues, sending flowers to the sound and stage management team, and refusing to sign a "Hell's Kitchen" playbill due to perceived loudness.

Lewis defines microaggressions as "subtle, unintentional comments or actions that convey stereotypes, biases or negative assumptions about someone based on their race." She argues that referring to a predominantly Black show as "loud" reinforces harmful stereotypes and dismisses the artistry of the performers.

While acknowledging the potential for thank-you flowers to be seen as courteous, Lewis criticizes the gesture as "dismissive and out of touch" following LuPone's formal complaint. She emphasizes the impact of her actions on the production and the performers.

Lewis urges Broadway veterans to consider how their feedback can be communicated respectfully and to use their platforms to support diverse show teams. She reminds LuPone that Broadway is a community that values respect and collaboration, and that all shows deserve recognition and celebration for their unique contributions.

Lewis concludes by respectfully requesting that LuPone issue an apology to "Hell's Kitchen". Representatives for LuPone have not yet responded to requests for comment.
