AceShowbiz - Director Barry Sonnenfeld recalled the hilarious and unforgettable incident that occurred on the set of "Men in Black". In an interview with Kelly Ripa on her podcast, "Let's Talk Off Camera", Sonnenfeld talked about the incident involving Will Smith.
The said incident took place when Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were sealed inside a futuristic car for a high-speed sequence. The hermetically sealed pod was meant to prevent the actors from falling out, but it also trapped a pungent odor.
According to Sonnenfeld, upon rolling the camera, he heard Smith exclaim, "Oh Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder!" While Jones reacted calmly, the smell quickly overwhelmed the cast and crew. Sonnenfeld explained, "You really don't want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don't even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch."
The potent aroma forced the evacuation of the stage for approximately three hours. After Tommy Lee Jones raced to safety, Sonnenfeld joked, "Will Smith is a farter. It's just some people are."
Despite the incident, Sonnenfeld emphasized that Smith remained a beloved figure on set. He also shared a humorous anecdote about Smith's "accolade room" in his Calabasas home, a space designed for displaying his numerous awards. Sonnenfeld confessed, "I still make fun of Will. He said, 'Oh, that's my accolade room for the MTV Awards and all the awards.'"
The incident did not affect the professional relationship between Smith and Sonnenfeld, as they went on to collaborate on two sequels to "Men in Black" in 2002 and 2012. The original 1997 film, which starred Smith and Jones, became a massive box office success, solidifying Smith's status as a global superstar.
