AceShowbiz - Cardi B has criticized the social media backlash against Tyla after she passed her Best Afrobeats Video award to Lil Nas X at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Cardi expressed her support for Tyla during a discussion on X Spaces, saying that Tyla "wishes she never won that VMA award" if she knew it would bring such negative attention.
Cardi defended Tyla's decision to pass the award, noting that "those awards are heavy" and that Tyla is "very skinny" and "has to weigh like 109 pounds."
The female rapper furthermore slammed accusations suggesting that Tyla made Halle Bailey hold her award. "I love Halle but she didn’t even ask Halle to hold the award! She asked Lil Nas X, a man, to hold it," Cardi said.
Tyla herself had previously addressed the controversy on X, stating that she "was not asking my girl Halle... We just girls." She clarified that she was excited about her VMA win for her song "Water."
Cardi's comments highlight the challenges that artists face when navigating the intense scrutiny of social media. She urged fans to be more understanding and to avoid "taking a picture, [taking] a moment, and [making] it something that it's not, and then just crush somebody."
