AceShowbiz - Despite Russell Crowe's Oscar-winning performance as Maximus Decimus Meridius in the original film, he will not reprise his role in "Gladiator II" due to his character's tragic demise. According to Scott, the decision was based on the story's plotline.
"The plot, frankly, was right under our noses," Scott told Empire magazine. "I think [Crowe] is still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship." However, he added, "As long as he doesn't start b***hing about how he wasn't consulted. Why would I? He's dead!"
Crowe has expressed mixed feelings about the sequel. While he admits to being "slightly uncomfortable" with it due to his character's death, he also acknowledges the impact the original film had on his career.
"I'm slightly jealous," Crowe said on a podcast. "Because I was a much younger man, and it was a huge experience in my life. It changed my life, really. It's something that changed the way people regarded me and what I do for a living."
Scott's comments reveal that he maintains a respectful relationship with Crowe despite their differences regarding the sequel. "Gladiator II" is set years after the original and features Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Maximus and Lucilla. It is scheduled to premiere on November 22 in the U.S.
