AceShowbiz - Meghan McCain, the former co-host of "The View", has taken aim at actress Blake Lively" for her promotional strategy for the movie "It Ends with Us". Based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, the film follows a woman struggling with domestic abuse.
McCain, 39, expressed concern that Lively's promotion of the movie, which encourages women to see it as a "fun girl movie" while downplaying the seriousness of domestic violence, is insensitive and disrespectful to victims.
"If you're taking on the responsibility of telling the story about a woman in a domestic violence situation, you have to be respectful that you're representing millions and millions of women and men who are victims of domestic violence," McCain said on her podcast, "Citizen McCain".
McCain questioned Lively's fame, suggesting she has only gained recognition through her role in "Gossip Girl" and her marriage to actor Ryan Reynolds. She also criticized Lively's lack of experience with domestic violence, stating, "I don't think I've ever seen anything she's actually in."
McCain's criticism sparked backlash from "It Ends with Us" actor Brandon Sklenar, who defended the film's female contributors and their commitment to delivering a powerful message about domestic violence.
"Vilifying the women who put so much of their heart and soul into making this film because they believe so strongly in its message seems counterproductive and detracts from what this film is about," Sklenar wrote on Instagram.
