AceShowbiz - Fans of the "Game of Thrones" universe were abuzz when news broke about a potential Jon Snow spinoff, but actor Kit Harington has revealed why the project is no longer moving forward.
In a recent interview with GQ Hype, Kit Harington delved into the reasons behind the shelving of the much-anticipated "Game of Thrones" sequel series centered on his character, Jon Snow. Harington, now 37, confessed that he "backed out" after years of development, due to concerns about the story's trajectory.
"I don't really want to say, because it starts a whole thing," Harington said in the interview published Monday. He explained, "What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, 'Would you consider this?' My first reaction was no."
"And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way."
Despite the initial excitement, the project didn't quite come together as envisioned. "We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn't... nothing got us excited enough. In the end, I kind of backed out and said, 'I think if we push this any further and keep developing it, we could end up with something that's not good. And that's the last thing we all want.' "
Both "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin and HBO CEO Casey Bloys had confirmed that the spinoff about the King of the North was being developed. However, as Harington noted, "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being."
Harington also shed light on his personal hesitation to return to the fantasy franchise, acknowledging the "baggage" associated with Jon Snow. "In some ways, you need to divorce completely from this previous thing, and we're only a few years after it. The role will always be just such a significant factor of my life. It might very well be the biggest, most important piece of work I do," he said, adding that it played a monumental role in his personal life, including meeting his wife, Rose Leslie.
By the last season of "Game of Thrones," Harington admitted he was "completely over" the show, citing exhaustion as a primary reason. "I look at pictures of me in that final season, and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn't have another season in me," he confessed.
Reflecting on the series finale, Harington acknowledged fan disappointment, stating, "I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn't quite work."
For now, the Jon Snow spinoff remains firmly on the shelf, with Harington focusing on other projects, including his role in the HBO series "Industry."
