The actress discusses the risks she took early in her career when she defied her agents to play Corky, an ex-con who falls in love with Violet (Jennifer Tilly), in the 1996 sapphic noir cult classic.

AceShowbiz - Gina Gershon faced significant opposition from her agents when she considered taking on the lead role in the 1996 sapphic noir cult classic "Bound". "My agents were like, 'We will not let you do this movie. You are ruining your career. We will not be able to let you represent. You will never work again,' " she recalled on the It Happened In Hollywood podcast.

Despite their objections, Gershon believed strongly in the film and the Wachowskis, who were making their directorial debut. "It was a great script and I could tell they were incredible directors," she said.

Gershon's agents expressed concern that playing a lesbian role would damage her career, especially following her performance in Paul Verhoeven's "Showgirls" (1995). "You can't play a lesbian ... because you just won't be able to work at all," they told her.

"First of all, it's so short-sighted to say this is a lesbian movie. I mean, they happen to be lesbians, they happen to be into women. But it was really a movie about trust, there's a bigger issue," Gershon argued.

Undeterred, Gershon stood her ground, defying the narrow-minded views of her agents. "I thought it was so small-minded and shortsighted. And if that was what we were up against, I was in. I was into making a point, because I thought it was absolutely ridiculous," she said.

In "Bound", Gershon portrays Corky, an ex-con who falls in love with Violet (Jennifer Tilly), the girlfriend of ruthless gangster Caesar. Together, they devise a plan to escape with $2 million of the mob's money.

Gershon remains proud of her decision to star in "Bound", despite the initial resistance she faced. "I thought, well, I could cut off my hair, cut off my nails, have no makeup. I get the girl. I get the car. I screw over the mob. It's a win-win all around," she said.

The Blu-ray special edition of "Bound" from the Criterion Collection was recently released, featuring interviews with Gershon and Tilly discussing their groundbreaking roles in the film.
